LINC-ED – Bayfield’s new Student Management System (SMS)
We are pleased to be launching a new student
management and reporting system, LINC-ED, in the next few weeks of this term.
With the
requirement for schools to use and report on National Standards being removed
it is timely that we review our practices to ensure that our system
acknowledges a child’s progress, as well as their achievement across the
curriculum.
The traditional reporting
system we have had, has sent reports home twice a year. Teachers have felt that
this is doing a disservice to our children as this information takes weeks to
put together and is often not current by the time it goes home.
LINC-ED will allow teachers and students to:
- post up to date information about each child’s learning, progress and next steps which will be shared with you regularly. Parents will still access comments on Reading, Writing, Mathematics and a general comment
- share learning anytime, anywhere and can be viewed on any device. The online report is designed to build up over the year and from year to year. This will mean that over time you will have access to comments, assessments, images and videos of your child’s learning journey all in the one place. It will also show your child’s progress through a curriculum level.
Our aim is to implement a robust system that
allows teachers, parents and students to access learning goals and evidence in
an online environment that is secure, easy and effective. In terms of security,
LINC-ED commissioned Andrew Horton, an internet security expert to write a
report on the security features of the system. Andrew reported that the system
was “as secure as some banks.”
We will be rolling out LINC-ED to parents
towards the end of this term. More information will be provided in
the coming weeks and months, including dates for parents to come along and have
a look at the new system with the support of teachers. There will be ongoing
support during this transition process.
We are looking forward to joining many local
schools and schools across New Zealand to implement this new student management
system that reflects the access to information that we experience in so many
other areas of life in 2019.
